ASE’s Scotland Conference Returned to In-Person Format at Kinross High School

The ASE’s Scotland Conference made a welcome return to an in-person format this year, hosted at Kinross High School. In light of the forthcoming changes to Scotland’s curriculum, the event featured a timely keynote address from Ian Menzies, Senior Education Officer at Education Scotland. Ian provided an overview of the National Curriculum Improvement Cycle process currently underway and outlined early developments and emerging ideas.

Following this insightful keynote, the conference offered a vibrant programme for primary and secondary teachers, as well as science technicians. Attendees explored practical classroom strategies and key topics such as climate science and hands-on practical science, gaining valuable inspiration to support their professional development.

The event also included a dedicated session on inclusive practical work in science and the British Sign Language (BSL) STEM glossary—a vital resource for making scientific concepts more accessible. Throughout the day, participants took advantage of the exhibition and numerous opportunities to connect with colleagues from across the science education community.

On the 31st May over 60 science teachers and technicians met at Kinross High School for a day of Science CPD with a focus on practical work and inclusion.

The day started with a keynote from Ian Menzies (Education Scotland) on the Curriculum Improvement Cycle, an excellent opportunity for all of us to catch up with the work going on, who is involved and the plans for the future of the Curriculum for Excellence. This was followed by 4 workshop sessions each offering a choice for primary, secondary teachers and technicians. There were many highlights including Science on Stage, primary science for climate change, the development of British Sign Language for science and inclusion in practical science.

The day was also supported by a small exhibition with a variety of suppliers and organisations and showcasing science related projects.

Our thanks are extended to Kinross HS and staff especially the caterers, the presenters and of course to the delegates who came from all over Scotland.
