Electrifying circuits
During the session we’ll be exploring models of electric current, potential difference and resistance that can help us and our students gain a better understanding of what is going on, even though we can’t see the charges moving! We’ll use online simulations, simple demonstrations and toys that can be useful for the classroom, and explore some GCSE questions along the way, addressing common student misconceptions. We’ll look at how a ‘maths-last’ approach can help embed numerical relationships more firmly. You’ll come away feeling more confident about your own understanding of circuits and how to teach this topic.
Topics covered, to support teaching at GCSE level:
- From static to current electricity
- Understanding potential difference
- Resistance and the relationship between R, V and I
Format: 90 minute interactive remotely delivered webinar via Zoom.
Facilitators: You will receive a warm welcome from expert trainers Christina Astin and Andrea Mapplebeck.
This session is part of the Teaching Physics: Basics to Brilliance series.
All sessions will be interactive and will allow time to identify own ideas and discuss how to develop own teaching.
Format: 6 online sessions, each 90 minutes long, spread over two terms.
You do not need to book and attend all 6 sessions - you can pick which ones are best for you!
Each ticket will provide you with the recording for the session which you can watch on demand until December 2025. With 6 recordings you will have a library of expert subject-knowledge support to help you when you or your department need it the most. Please note that recordings will be made available once the live session has run - you can find out more information about the dates of the other sessions below.
