It is estimated that about one in every 100 schoolchildren in the UK is on the autistic spectrum (source: The National Autistic Society). This gives us a very rough figure (from the 2001 census) of around 133,500 schoolchildren who have some form of autism. With mainstream schools increasingly taking responsibility for inclusive education and the provision of schooling for children with special educational needs (SEN), many of these children will be educated outside of special schools.
