The new National Curriculum for Key Stages 1 and 2 (ages 5-11), to be implemented from September 2014, also makes the distinction between science concepts and processes. Conceptual knowledge and understanding is presented as a sequence of concepts covering biology, chemistry and physics from Year 1 (age 5) to Year 6 (age 11).'Working scientifically' describes the process of scientific enquiry and emphasises that children should learn these skills embedded within content (DfE, 2013). At what age do these ideas about science begin to form?
